INDIA’S FIRST WOMAN ARCHITECT- EULIE CHOWDHURY

BHANDARI MARBLE GROUP SALUTES INDIA’S FIRST WOMAN ARCHITECT- EULIE CHOWDHURY.

As India witnesses racing development, let’s not forget the strong women from History who did us proud.

EULIE’S LIFE AND CAREER:

She worked in the fields of general architecture, landscape architecture and design, and was also a teacher and writer. She was a pioneer woman architect working in India. Some sources state that she was also the first female architect in Asia.

After her education she worked in close collaboration with Le Corbusier in the planning design and construction of the city of Chandigarh. Her father was a diplomat. She is among a small group of women architects who were working in Asia during her career.

We at BHANDARI MARBLE GROUP, identify with the hard work and struggle of Chowdhury who went on to become India’s first woman Architect. Her passion and her endless achievements have engraved India’s name in the minds and hearts of many across the world.

Our forefathers have time and again paid their tributes to such great architects and have also been fortunate enough to work closely with a few of these great minds.

OUR FOREFATHERS– RUNNING PARALELL IN HISTORY

The vision and dedication towards making India an infrastructurally sound nation has been shared by several great architects and many people like our forefathers. They had done their bit by emerging strong with BHANDARI MARBLE GROUP and pledging to aid their efforts by providing them with the best quality of natural stone for their projects.

This virtue of staying true to our nation and our fellow architects has been passed down to us.

INDIA REFLECTS THE ART:

Her third assignment, from 1971 to 1976, was with the Chief Architect, who she worked with to complete the second stage of Chandigarh city planning. Chowdhury’s assignment during the period 1963–65 was as the Director of the School of Architecture of Delhi.

During this period she also authored a book of memories of Le Corbusier titled Those Were The Days. In 1970, she was Chief State Architect of Haryana and from 1976–81 the Chief State Architect of the State of Punjab. She retired from public service in 1981 and then worked on her own in private practice in Chandigarh.

HER OTHER WORKS:

She was involved with many publications, which included the translation of Le Corbusier’s book, Three Human Establishments, from French to English, which became an official publication of the Punjab government. She also wrote articles for magazines, including Progressive Architecture, Architectural Design and Casabella. In 1983, she established the Alliance Française de Chandigarh.

She wrote articles in the Saturday Plus supplement of The Tribune and wrote a column titled Sinners and Winners. She advocated euthanasia. She died on 20 September 1995 in Chandigarh, India.

Chowdhury was a pioneer woman in Indian architecture and BHANDARI MARBLE GROUP remember her courage, hard work and great contribution for our country.
